City crews have completed a loop connection on the north side of the Parksville Wetlands, adding 600 m to the 2.3 km trail loop.
The city says it needs to widen the trails for maintenance, emergency access and safe egress for ambulance and fire protection.
The work will complete a 2.3 km loop trail within one side of the wetlands and is expected to take up to six weeks.
Wet conditions and supply issues mean some upgrades to the Parksville Wetlands trails will have to be finished next year.
Crews will be working on trails on the Coldwater Road side of the Parksville Wetlands starting Oct. 4.
“Every other municipality in Canada is falling over themselves to protect green space. This decision is going the opposite way, it’s going the way of the dinosaurs,” Coun. Doug O’Brien said.
