Heavy snowfall has prompted Canada Post to issue a red alert and announce it will not make deliveries on Vancouver Island.

The RDN said it will offer free drop off service at the Church Road Transfer Station in Parksville and the Regional Landfill because of the extended pickup delays.

Vancouver Island University campuses, including Parksville Centre, are closed today.

East Vancouver Island could see more snow and treacherous road conditions today (Jan. 4).

The Oceanside area could see even more snow tonight (Dec. 29).

A wind warning is also in effect for Saturday morning, with strong winds of 70 km/h gusting to 90.

The city said its priority, during and after a snowfall, is to clear major arterial streets (such as Highway 19A and Alberni Highway), as well as access to emergency services.

Areas near the water could see between 5-15 cm and residents further inland could see up to 25 cm today. The snow is expected to fall through the afternoon, according to Environment Canada.
