Connie Walker is currently investigating a story about the St. Michael’s residential school in Duck Lake, Saskatchewan.
The program came about after Indigenous Elder Linda Jack gathered friends and community groups to help her quest to learn how to read.
The Parksville and Qualicum Beach civic offices will be closed and flags will fly at half-mast. RDN offices and recreation facilities will also be closed and flags will fly at half-mast.
Island Health observed a moment of silence to honour and respect the 215 Indigenous children found buried near a former residential school in Kamloops.
“This is an opportunity for all of us in Canada, in society, to acknowledge there is pain and to acknowledge the harm that has been done,” said Edna Howard, who organized the event with the city.
The city has set up a memorial at the cenotaph on Craig Street next to the PCTC, where the evening lights will glow orange until June 9, according to a media release.
