The pests pose a threat to trees such as Garry oak, arbutus, red alder, aspen, cottonwood, maple, orchard fruit trees, nut trees and many species of urban ornamental trees, as well as food crops such as apples and blueberries.
“Invasive species like zebra and quagga mussels are a major threat to our ecosystems and infrastructure in British Columbia,” said George Heyman, minister of environment and climate change strategy.
No sightings or collection of Asian giant hornets were reported on Vancouver Island in 2020, according to the province.
The policy requires trees removed or lost due to human activity to be replaced, reducing the overall loss of tree canopy.
