“Invasive species like zebra and quagga mussels are a major threat to our ecosystems and infrastructure in British Columbia,” said George Heyman, minister of environment and climate change strategy.
Eligible candidates must be enrolled in full-time studies in the past academic year, with intentions of returning to studies in the fall. Applications are open to adults aged 18–30.
B.C is home to 1,035 provincial parks, recreation areas, conservancies, ecological reserves and protects areas, covering more than 14 million hectares. It has acquired 650 more hectares for parkland.
“We plan to do one of these a year for the rest of our lives and that’s kind of our bucket list.”
Grants totalling $24,665 will help habitat rehabilitation, education, outreach and stock enhancement for the Oceanside area salmon population.
The BC Parks Foundation is attempting to raise funds to purchase West Ballenas Island to avoid private development.
“[People] will talk about all sorts of things as the problem, but that is all avoiding the issue. The real issue that is affecting salmon is the climate crisis,” said Greg Taylor, fisheries advisor for the Watershed Watch Salmon Society.
The deer are suspected to have died from Adenovirus Hemorrhagic Disease (AHD), but the province said further testing is needed to confirm the diagnosis. B.C. has never documented cases of the disease before.
