Police investigators were able to examine the basement of a Nanaimo home that exploded on Feb. 27, after heavy equipment was brought in to provide access.

Investigators from Nanaimo Fire and Rescue, Fortis BC and RCMP were on scene throughout the Feb. 28. Police say investigators methodically sifted through materials from the destroyed home.

“At this time, in consultation with partnering agencies, the investigation has been turned over to the Nanaimo RCMP to determine if foul play was involved in the explosion,” said Const. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP in a media release.

Police are asking if anyone saw anything suspicious on the property in the hours leading up to the explosion at 8:20 PM on Feb. 27, to contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file #2022-6847.
