Nanaimo RCMP are investigating a number of thefts from a local non-profit.

An LGBTQ+ flag was stolen from outside the Nanaimo Family Life Association building on Nov. 24, followed by four red dresses over the next three weeks, according to an RCMP media release. Police said the latest incident occurred on Dec. 11 or 12.

The red dresses, like others displayed in communities across Canada, symbolize the spirits of missing and murdered Indigenous women and children, while the flag and its colours reflect the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community and the spectrum of human sexuality and gender.

Police said there are currently no suspects or witnesses to the thefts.

“Investigators are presently working with staff to assess and update their security systems to hopefully prevent these incidents from reoccurring,” said Const. Gary O’Brien.

Anyone with information on these incidents can call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file #2021-45948.
