A 25 m section of Memorial Avenue will be closed near the intersection with the Alberni Highway starting Dec. 1, as crews begin work on installation of new manholes and prepare for upcoming changes to the streetscape.
Traffic control personnel will be present to guide unfamiliar drivers, pedestrians and other road users. The road closure will be in effect indefinitely, as the project team prepares to install the new Memorial Plaza in this location, according to a release from the city.
Access to driveways and local traffic will continue, with access from McMillan Street South and the city-owned parking lots at 146 and 171 Memorial Avenue, according to the release. The city said crews have already been on site surveying and locating underground utilities.
Weather permitting, the first layer of paving for Hirst Avenue West is scheduled before the Memorial Avenue road closure, according to the city.
The city said traffic interruptions will be less frequent on Hirst Avenue West because construction crews will be working behind the new curbs on sidewalks, landscaping and streetlighting.
