A second resident has tested positive for COVID-19 at Chartwell Malaspina Care Residence in Nanaimo.

The additional case was identified through follow-up testing after one resident and two staff members tested positive on Oct. 31, prompting Island Health to declare an outbreak.

The outbreak continues to be limited to the long-term care home’s Hummingbird Unit, according to a media release from Island Health.

Residents and staff are isolated in the affected unit. Social visits, admissions and transfers have stopped, according to Island Health.

Communication with residents, families and staff is ongoing.

Two deaths were linked to the previous COVID-19 outbreak at the care home that began in late December 2020 and lasted until February.
