One person is dead after a collision between a motor vehicle and two members of a road construction work crew on the Trans-Canada Highway south of Nanaimo.

Police, fire services and ambulance attended the scene near Kipp Road around midnight on Sept. 24.

The driver was detained by police for investigation, according to a media release from Nanaimo RCMP. One victim died at the scene, while a second was transported to hospital with serious injuries, police said.

“While the investigation is only in the preliminary stages and evidence continues to be gathered, alcohol and speed are believed to be contributing factors,” reads the release.

The highway was closed for several hours, but was reopened at 7 a.m. on Sept. 24.

Any witnesses to the incident, or anyone with dash cam footage of the collision or video that precedes the collision, can contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, and quote file #2021-35952.
