Two Comox Valley co-workers will share a $500,000 lottery prize after matching all four numbers in an Aug. 20 draw.

Deborah Banks, from Cumberland, and Dale Miller, from Comox, work together in Fanny Bay.

Banks woke up her friend to share the good news, after scanning the ticket from home on an app.

“My first thoughts were, ‘it’s a joke, it’s too early in the morning for this,’” Miller said.

“My first thoughts were, ‘this can’t be true,’” Banks added.

Banks said sometimes the two select numbers that are meaningful to them when they play together, but the winning ticket had randomly selected numbers.

To celebrate, the friends treated their families to dinner. They share similar dreams for their unexpected prize: paying off their mortgages and saving for retirement.

“Awesome! Totally awesome — still doesn’t feel real,” Miller said.

“It’s a dream come true,” Banks added.

So far this year, B.C. lottery players redeemed over $29 million in prize-winning Extra tickets and more than $160 million from Lotto Max, according to BCLC.
