Five fire departments responded to a building on fire near the Alberni Highway in Coombs today (Sept. 9).
Fire crews spent about 40 minutes fighting the fire, but the building was destroyed, according to Aaron Poirier, Coombs-Hilliers Volunteer Fire Department chief. He added the cause of the blaze is undetermined.
A man was assessed by BC Ambulance for a possible burn injury, Poirier said.
“It turns out on further investigation he got close to the fire and was singed, but no burn injuries. He was not transported,” he said.
The Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Errington and Dashwood fire departments also responded to the incident, which required water tanker shuttles be brought in because there are no fire hydrants nearby, according to Poirier.
