Qualicum Beach town council deferred third reading of a proposed zoning amendment, which would allow the owner to subdivide a property to build three single-family homes at 118 Sunningdale Road East.

The town held a public hearing for the development prior to considering third reading reading at its July 21 regular council meeting.

Current zoning on the property allows single-family dwellings and duplexes, but the owner wants to divide into three separate parcels. The town has created a site-specific zone in response to the application.

Many residents at the hearing spoke against the project, citing lack of parking, high density and rainwater management concerns.

A common theme among those opposed was the lot is too small for the proposal.

The town said it received 15 letters in opposition to the new zoning and only one in favour. Only one speaker attended the hearing to speak in favour.

Coun. Teunis Westbroek wanted to defer third reading until council meets again in September, but Coun. Scott Harrison suggested putting it on the agenda for a special council meeting on July 28 — the last meeting before council breaks for August.

Council carried a motion to defer until next week.
