No injuries were reported after the Bow Horn Bay and Deep Bay fire departments responded to a brush fire on the Inland Island Highway today (July 21), close to the Big Qualicum River bridge.

A vehicle driving in the southbound lane blew a tire and sparked the fire, just north of the bridge, according to Mark Taylor, deputy chief for the Bow Horn Bay Volunteer Fire Department.

“The vehicle driver and other people passing by used fire extinguishers to control the fire. Bow Horn Bay Fire arrived on scene and applied water,” Taylor said. Deep Bay Fire also responded and applied water to the affected area.

“BC Wildfire Coastal had a vehicle on scene, with a chopper dropping off an initial attack crew,” he added.

BC Wildfire Coastal will patrol the area for a few hours to ensure there are no further problems, Taylor said.
