A new traffic signal is operational at Exit 51 on Highway 19 and Highway 4A, where the Inland Island Highway meets the Alberni Highway.

The provincial government said traffic increased over the years with many people travelling to Coombs and through to Port Alberni, Sproat Lake, Tofino and Ucluelet.

“The ministry had previously reviewed the safety and performance of the intersection and found full signalization of the intersection was warranted to improve public safety,” reads a media release from the province.

Construction was completed June 2 and the lights became operational on June 3, the province said.

“The design included making this spot safer for cyclists and pedestrians. Cyclists will benefit from having a controlled intersection transition and cross onto Highway 4A,” the release continues.

Drivers are reminded to obey construction zone speed limits and the direction of traffic control personnel.
