Coun. Anne Skipsey was formally sworn into Qualicum Beach town council at its first meeting since the byelection.

Heather Svensen, chief election officer and corporate administrator conducted a short swearing-in ceremony via Zoom at council’s May 27 regular meeting.

“I am truly honoured to be able to serve our community in this capacity,” said Skipsey after taking her oath of office.

“I know there will be times when we disagree around this council table and within the community, as even my own family doesn’t agree on everything. But I will be respectful of the perspectives of my fellow council and community members.”

Svensen said town staff sent a cake to Skipsey and her family and council committed to hosting a proper celebration when COVID-19 regulations allow.

Mayor Brian Weise congratulated Skipsey and gave her two minutes to address council and the public at the start of the meeting.

She thanked town staff for their work organizing the byelection.

Skipsey won the byelection on May 15 with 1,539 votes, trailed by Sarah Duncan with 1,017.
