The Parksville Fire department responded to a structure fire around 2:47 p.m. at 1209 East Island Highway.
“Upon my arrival there was light smoke coming from the facade on the east side of the building,” said Assistant Fire Chief Mike Tisdale. “There were four roofers on the roof and they were attempting to put the fire out with buckets of water and they did a great job. They were successful at putting the fire out.”
He said the fire caused only minor damage and no injuries were reported — the roofers were checked by paramedics for smoke inhalation and and did not require further attention.
The first fire crew to arrive climbed onto the roof and finished putting the fire out, then searched the roof for hotspots to insure the structure was safe, Tisdale said.
He said the fire could have been worse, but was controlled quickly. The cause was not immediately evident.
“Until I speak to the roofers to find out what really happened it’s still under investigation,” Tisdale said.
