One person was taken to hospital and a cat died as a result of a kitchen fire Friday evening.

Parksville Fire Rescue responded to a call on Evergreen Street around 9 p.m., according to Fire Chief Marc Norris.

“Crews found an occupant with smoke inhalation and burns outside and significant  active fire in the kitchen area of the single story rancher type house with smoke throughout the structure,” he said in an email to Oceanside News.

The first fire engine crew to arrive entered the home and extinguished the fire and the next crew on scene ventilated the structure and completed a secondary search, Norris said.

“There were no injuries to firefighters, however one cat was found deceased, likely of smoke inhalation,” he said.

The occupant was transported to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital by BC Ambulance.

Norris said Parksville Fire had 19 personnel on scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
