Island Health reports 88 new cases of COVID-19

Island Health reported 88 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend. There are now 303 active cases, according to the health authority’s website. Of these, 188 are in the central island region, 44 are in the south and 71 are in the north.

According to the B.C. government’s COVID-19 dashboard there are 17 people hospitalized and three in critical care in the Island Health Region.

Across the province there were 1,478 new cases reported over the weekend and there are now 4,464 active cases, according to a joint statement from Dr. Bonnie Henry, provincial health officer and Adrian Dix, minister of health.

There are 236 people hospitalized in B.C. with the virus, 65 of whom are in critical care, the statement said. There were eight deaths reported over the weekend.

To date, 275,681 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in the province — 83,777 of these have been second doses. 

The province announced an updated vaccination plan today which aims to have 400,000 residents vaccinated by early April.

“Every day we are one step closer to widespread community immunity and post-pandemic life. Let’s ensure we are continuing with our efforts until we get there,” reads the statement.
