A Union Bay man plans to pay off his mortgage with his $500,000 lottery win.
“$500,000 is an absolute game changer — and for us to say we own our home now, it’s just amazing,” said Rod Bitten.
Bitten said he only noticed he had won when he checked his bank account balance because he had signed up for a lottery subscription service.
“I usually buy them at a retailer,” said Bitten. “But we’ve been doing renovations on the house and so it’s possible without the subscription that I never would have bought a ticket for that day,” he said.
He said he received an email the day after the draw, saying he had won a prize, but he did not know how much it was until he looked at his account.
“My wife was there with me and said she wasn’t going to believe it until I phoned BCLC (British Columbia Lottery Corporation),” Bitten said.
He and his wife began hugging and crying when they saw the win and realized they could pay off their mortgage, he said.
