The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) awarded a $1.6 million construction tender for a new community centre in Meadowood. The RDN received 13 bids for the project and awarded the contract to Dawson Wallace Construction Ltd, the lowest of 13 bids.
The RDN also allocated $2.2 million of Electoral Area F community works funds in the 2021 budget to the community centre project at its electoral area services committee meeting on Jan. 7. The construction tender will come out of this budget, according to the RDN staff reports presented to the committee.
“A tender award of $1.648 million makes up the major portion of the overall project cost but not the entire cost of the project,” reads the report.
Staff said the anticipated additional project costs amount to $503,682, including a 20 per cent contingency. These costs will cover construction management services, building start-up expenses and drilling of a well on site, the report said.
All tender submissions were over the estimated cost of $1.3 million from July last year. RDN staff attributed this to increased construction costs and additional features in the building, requested by a community task force — including an expanded kitchen area.
