A woman was surprised to see money falling from the sky while walking in north Nanaimo on Jan. 4.

The woman, whose name is being withheld, told police a vehicle drove past her seconds before money began to fall around her.

Police said she could not provide a plate number or description of the vehicle, but said it did not stop. The woman picked up the money up and promptly called the Nanaimo RCMP to report it, police said.

No reports of lost money have been filed with the local detachment, according to RCMP.

Const. Gary O’Brien said the owner of the money may not be aware it flew out the car window.

“Another theory is that it may have been gained through illegal means,” he said, adding the owner may be reluctant to report the missing cash.

The money will be held for 90 days and if the lawful owner is not found, it will be turned over to the finder.

Anyone able to prove the money belongs to them can call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file # 2021-388.
