Another resident and a staff member have tested positive for COVID-19 at the Chartwell Malaspina Residence long-term care home in Nanaimo.

Island Health said the new cases were detected through a second round of mass testing performed this week. The resident who tested positive lives in the same unit where the outbreak was initially identified, and the staff member is assigned to that same unit. The outbreak remains confined to two units on the first floor of the home, the health authority said.

Since the outbreak was declared, more than 360 COVID-19 tests have been performed on residents and staff at the home, according to Island Health. Seven residents and one staff member have tested positive in total. The origin of the outbreak — declared on Dec. 27, remains under investigation.

Staff and resident movement in the facility has been restricted and cleaning measures have been enhanced, according to Island Health.
