Island Health has identified a second COVID-19 case at the Chartwell Malaspina Residence long-term care home in Nanaimo. A resident who was in close contact with the initial case tested positive on Dec. 28, according to the health authority.

Care home staff are working with Island Health to carry out contact tracing to determine how the virus was brought into the facility. The residents who tested positive are both isolating in their rooms.

Island Health said the outbreak remains limited to one unit on the first floor of the facility. The health authority declared an outbreak at the long-term care home on Dec. 27, when a resident tested positive.

Residents and staff will be tested and the facility will begin screening people twice a day. Staff and resident movement in the facility has been restricted and cleaning measures have been enhanced, according to Island Health.
