Island Health has declared a COVID-19 outbreak at the Chartwell Malaspina Care Residence long-term care home in Nanaimo.

One resident tested positive for COVID-19 and is isolating in their room, according to the health authority. The outbreak is limited to one unit on the facility’s first floor. Admissions, transfers and visitation to the care home have been stopped.

Island Health said it is working with Malaspina staff to identify people who may have been exposed to the virus. Residents and staff will be tested and the facility will begin screening people twice a day.

Staff and resident movement in the facility has been restricted and cleaning measures have been enhanced, according to Island Health.
