The Coast Parksville Hotel was evacuated Sunday evening after reports of smoke coming from the roof. The Parksville Fire Department, with help from the Qualicum Beach detachment, responded and extinguished an electrical fire.
“We had a crew go up inside the building immediately to look for any fire extension inside the structure and smoke and to ensure that evacuation on the third floor was occurring,” said Fire Chief Marc Norris.

He said the quick response prevented the fire from spreading and causing significant damage to the roof of the hotel.
“The ladder company went to the front of the building — they made access to the soffit area and extinguished the fire right away,” he said.
Building staff pulled the fire alarm to initiate evacuation and nobody was hurt. “We were able to evacuate the building fairly fast,” said Karim Mohammadi, general manager of the hotel. He said staff regularly practise fire drills.
