Vancouver Island reported nine new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend. There are now 13 active cases in the health region, according to Island Health

Across the province, there were 1,120 new cases reported over the weekend and six additional deaths from the virus, according to Dr. Réka Gustafson, deputy health officer, who provided today’s update. There are now 1,945 active cases in B.C. — 90 people are hospitalized, 19 of whom are in critical care.

“These numbers are concerning for all of us, but we have learned a great deal about COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic,” said Gustafson. “We have learned what living with the virus looks like and what we need to do to keep ourselves, those around us and those in our communities safe.”

There are four active cases in both central and south Vancouver Island and there are five cases in the north, according to Island Health.

Gustafson acknowledged we are now in the eleventh month of the pandemic and said it is important people continue to do important things safely.

“Social connection is vert important to our personal and community well-being and we need to continue to live well and live safely,” she said.
