“The quick response by tenants, one with a fire extinguisher, the other using a bucket of water, stopped the fire in its tracks and prevented any spread,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, spokesperson for Nanaimo RCMP.

Two fires set in stairwells of a Nanaimo apartment building have been deemed arson by RCMP.

The fires were reported at approximately 10:15 p.m. on Oct. 23 and 3:15 p.m. on Oct. 24 at the Forrest Glen Apartments on Wellington Road. Police and fire crews responded.

No injuries were reported and the two fires were quickly extinguished. RCMP said remnants of burnt paper were found at both fire scenes.

“The quick response by tenants, one with a fire extinguisher, the other using a bucket of water, stopped the fire in its tracks and prevented any spread,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, spokesperson for Nanaimo RCMP.

Police said they have few leads other than a tenant who reported hearing several young voices and running down a hallway, away from the first fire less than a minute after it was detected.

“It is unknown if those people are involved but investigators would certainly like to speak with them,” said O’Brien.

RCMP ask anyone who has information on either of the fires, to call its non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
